Museum of London

How are you, guys? Today, I was in the group of collection management system. The curator introduced the system "MimsyXG", which can record a lot of images in differet areas, such as information of objects, where you get, who give you. The information is useful for curators. Also, curators in the museum should have training to use this system. For instance, how to make images in different groups in order to display in different topics. In addition, the "object location history" is helpful to obtain record of objects, like loan record, object or people information and pest infection.

He also described a website, which can explore thousands of online objects and hundreds of facinating information pages about every decade and corner of Greater London. http://www.20thcenturylondon.org.uk/
This is a project what 12 museums get in. Very interesting.

We also talked about some issues concering object upload and copyright. However, I am not familiar with these areas. Then, I was wondering how to get authority to put these objects online. Anyway, it's a nice trip for me.
Best wishes

Thanks for that Yu Ting - I just took a look at the the London site, it has some interesting material. I especially liked the map based navigation (click on a London borough to find out more about it). I didn't know that the British Museum once had its own Underground station - that would be very useful!

Copyright and authority to use material online: a good place to start is Collections Link, here:
http://www.collectionslink.org.uk/get_to_grips_with_copyright

At the foot of this page is a link to Digital Copyright, including a factsheet which you can download and keep.

Some useful questions when looking at this kind of site:

which museum built it?
who funded it?
who is the audience for this site?
what Content Management System does it run on?

Its interesting to think about this site in terms of sustainability, especially in terms of audience.
